Social Media & Socialization in the U.S.

The Facebook movement started in the year 2004. Most people were hesitant about signing up for Facebook exposure. However, as the Facebook craze took off in the media, more and more people began to sign up and get involved. The same with Twitter, which began in the year 2006. Membership grew at a fast pace and everyone was talking about it.

At the time these social medias began, face to face socialization had decreased and letter writing was almost obsolete. The families only met at funerals or family reunions and friends got together at parties or weddings. The world’s communication genre had changed drastically. What caused this change? Families no longer live locally and grow up in this environment because of job availability and a need for the younger generation to see more of the world, more excitement and a faster pace of living situations.

Thereby, more involvement in social medias to keep in touch with family and friends. Families can post pictures of themselves and grandparents can visually see the grand kids growth online rather than in person.

Popularity with these social medias grew and grew and today is still the most popular means of socialization worldwide. The older generation are coping with these changes but does not necessarily like it. However, the younger generation believe this is the only way to communicate other than an occasion phone call. Is phone calls obsolete now? Has visitation with family and friends become just an occasional funeral, family reunion, wedding or a planned party here and there? What do you think will be the next BIG social media craze?

  2. I remember the days of myspace, and of napster. Napster, some could say was the start of online social media. While most everyone remembers the illegal music sharing, napster was a social media page with an incorrect focus on music. The guy started Naspter to allow people to share music with there friends, after a judge had ruled that no one would have over 10,000 friends. After that Naspter was started to prove that with internet that people could get over the number of friends that the judge had stated.

    1. Lee,

Yes, I remember Napster and Myspace. To touch base on Myspace a little, it wasn't the best social environment for people. Myspace was more about who's page looked the coolest. LOL. However, the other social media sites are now about who you choose to follow and stay in touch with today. We have come a long way from Myspace and Napster, but I'm not sure if it was the right path since we're now seeing the consequences from it.

  3. Alot of what you said is true. First it was the phones, then came Social Media, I can remember about the time cell phones became popular and for the first time, young kids owned cell phones. I was always on my phone all day talking, after I joined facebook in 2007, then I become somewhat of an addict. Around about 2009, I had finally had enough and decided to get of all Social Media. I personally think some people expose too much of themselves on Social Media.

    Thanks,

    1. Ngozi,

You're absolutely right. People do expose themselves way too much on social media. It should be more about sharing recipes, graduation pictures, cute kitten videos, etc. However, people are sharing nudes, their personal family drama, offensive videos, etc. Honestly, there are some things I've seen on social media that I wish I could erase from my memory. Lol.

  4. I think social media has certainly brought people closer together and eliminated geographic distance and cost of communication between family members and friends. People feel attached to a social media platform because it realizes their attachment to their friends and family members. However, like anything else, social media platforms have their downside: cyberbullying, fake news and misinformation, and other problems. I think it is a matter of time before people adapt and create societal rules for social media just like we created those rules for socializing in real life.
